Myopia Control
Myopia, or short-sightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry.
Increasing short-sightedness is associated with several more serious eye conditions in later life, such as retinal detachment, cataracts, glaucoma, and maculopathy. As short-sightedness worsens, the risk of developing these conditions increases.
At Belper Opticians, we are proud to offer a variety of treatments for short-sightedness, including MiSight contact lenses and the new Hoya Miyosmart spectacle lenses.
Why does myopia occur?
- Genetic history (e.g., one or both parents being short-sighted)
- Ethnicity
- Less time spent outdoors and prolonged near work
Can anything be done to stop myopia?
Unfortunately, there is no cure for myopia, but there are options that have proven successful in slowing its progression.

Frequently Asked Questions regarding Miyosmart Myopia Management Lenses
Are the lenses thicker or heavier than normal lenses?
No, the lenses are made from polycarbonate, a very light material, thinner than standard lenses and impact-resistant. An anti-reflection finish is included as standard.
Are there exercises in addition to the glasses?
No, but we will provide lifestyle recommendations, such as minimising close work and increasing outdoor activity, which can be beneficial.
How long will these specialised lenses be needed?
These lenses are prescribed while myopia is still progressing. On average, this is typically until around the age of 18 when myopia progression tends to slow. However, depending on lifestyle factors (e.g., more reading due to studying), the lenses may be needed into the early 20s.
How would you monitor or assess the progress?
We use a combination of eye exams every 6 months and questionnaires filled out at home. We will produce a “projection of myopia” during the initial consultation and refer back to this at each visit to ensure the lenses and treatment are effective.
How do the lenses work to slow down the progression of myopia?
Research suggests that the peripheral retinal image encourages the progression of myopia. The lenses blur the peripheral image to help prevent myopia from increasing. We will explain this further during your initial consultation.
What are the costs of the myopia management programme?
Unfortunately, myopia management is not currently covered by NHS funding.
However, we have bundled the assessments, product cost, and aftercare into a convenient monthly fee of £26.50 by direct debit for the Miyosmart glasses lenses.
This price includes unlimited aftercare and replacement lenses if the prescription changes.
Alternatively, we can explore contact lens options, such as MiSight contact lenses, if you prefer. For further information, please contact us on 01773 825614.
